EN: The Quantitative Methods II course consists mainly of practical weekly exercises in the computer lab and a small amount of classroom instruction. The examples provided for the exercises relate to both human and physical geography. Towards the end of the course, students will complete a small project where they will apply statistical methods to answer a selected research question. Projects may relate to human or physical geography.
The course focuses on the practical application of statistics in a geographical context. We work with a simple programming code to gain basic experience in (i) applied statistics and (ii) programming. After the course, students should be able to judge the application of statistical methods in a general context. They should also be able to apply simple statistical methods as well as simple scientific programs in their own research. The lectures will be in English.
FR: Le cours sur les méthodes quantitatives II comprend principalement des exercices pratiques hebdomadaires en laboratoire et une petite quantité d’instructions en classe. Les exemples fournis pour les exercices concernent à la fois la géographie humaine et physique. Vers la fin du cours, les étudiants réaliseront un petit projet dans lequel ils appliqueront des méthodes statistiques pour répondre à une question de recherche sélectionnée. Les projets peuvent avoir trait à la géographie humaine ou physique.
Le cours porte sur l'application pratique des statistiques dans un contexte géographique. Nous travaillons avec un code de programmation simple pour acquérir une expérience de base en (i) statistiques appliquées et (ii) en programmation. Après le cours, les étudiants devraient être en mesure de juger de l’application des méthodes statistiques dans un contexte général. Ils devraient également pouvoir appliquer des méthodes statistiques simples ainsi que des programmes scientifiques simples à leurs propres recherches. Les conférences seront en anglais.
DE: Der Kurs Quantitative Methoden II besteht hauptsächlich aus praktischen wöchentlichen Übungen im Computerraum und einer kleinen Menge Unterricht. Die Beispiele für die Übungen beziehen sich sowohl auf die menschliche als auch auf die physische Geographie. Gegen Ende des Kurses werden die Studenten ein kleines Projekt abschließen, in dem sie statistische Methoden anwenden, um eine ausgewählte Forschungsfrage zu beantworten. Projekte können sich auf die menschliche oder physische Geographie beziehen.
