Public debates in Western contexts still perceive Muslims largely as migrants who require integration. This ignores the fact that the subsequent generations of immigrants have been actively participating in society for quite some time and contribute to shaping it. The result is a new form of Muslim self-reflection in which social-ethical questions regarding the shaping of a plural society play a central role. What does it mean to live as a Muslim in such societies and to contribute to different sectors of social life? How do Islamic and social norms relate to each other? Focusing on key topics like citizenship, postmigration, secularism, conflicts and social justice, the lecture brings social science findings and Muslim voices into dialogue. This enables critical reflection on fundamental questions of society, an analysis of dynamic processes of Islamic thought, where an “ethical turn” is taking place, and the sharpening of methodological awareness within an interdisciplinary framework. The lecture is largely given in English. Discussion contributions and the examination can also be taken in both French and German.
