This two-part survey lecture course is intended to offer an overview of the development of English literature from the Renaissance to the present. The first part of the lecture course, held in autumn 2018, covered the periods from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. In the spring semester of 2019 we will be looking at literary movements from Romanticism, the Victorian age, modernism, to postmodern literature.

To gain credit, regular attendance is mandatory. More than two unexcused absences disqualify students from gaining credit.

First-year students are expected to take both parts of the lecture course in conjunction with an Introduction to Literary Studies Proseminar. There will be a written test at the end of the spring semester based on the material of both Survey lecture courses.

The grade of the module exam will be based on the grades achieved in written tests in the Introductory Proseminar (60%) and the grade achieved in the written test at the end of the spring semester survey lecture (40%).

MA students will be given an opportunity to take an exam at the end of the semester. The course is part of Module 4 (Eng. Lit. II: 1780–present).

This course is NOT designed for BA and MA students who attended Prof. Ghose’s Survey of English Literature lecture course in spring 2016.

On successful completion of the course, students will have gained an overview of the major literary movements and key works of English literature from Romanticism to the present. They will have acquired a knowledge of the main concepts that shaped each literary period.

Students are expected to acquire a copy of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Vol. 2. Copies are available at a discount at Librophoros (Rue de Rome 1, 1700 Fribourg, infos@librophoros.ch, +41 26 322 46 26).
