This course will introduce participants to different approaches to the promotion, protection and development of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR). The standards and monitoring mechanisms that exist at the international, regional and national levels in connection with the implementation of ESC rights will be discussed. The human rights to education, work, health, social security, property, food, water and sanitation will be analysed in theory and through practical case studies.

Contemporary challenges related to the obligations of non-state actors (businesses, international organizations, civil society and individuals) in connection with the implementation of ESC rights are explored. These issues include; the privatisation of water and sanitation services, the allocation of property rights, the extraterritorial obligations of states in the provision of development assistance and the impact of structural adjustment measures mandated by international financial organisations.
