This course is an introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis in ecology and nature conservation. The course provides the theoretical background (5 lectures) on how and when to use spatial analysis and hands on examples (10 practical lessons, using QGIS and R) specifically tailored at ecologists. The main topics covered are: (1) Introduction to GIS, (2) Manipulating spatial data, (3) Deriving spatial variables and (4) Introduction to species distribution models (SDMs).
