During the terrorist attacks in Brussels in March 2016 Twitter played an important role as a source for journalists. This and numerous other examples demonstrate that online media are changing every aspect of the production, content and reception of journalistic content. These crucial changes challenge traditional assumptions in journalism and require reassessment of even the most fundamental questions such as "What is journalism?" and "Who is a journalist?" The seminar will assess these questions as well as a wide range of aspects of digital journalism. Topics will include social media as sources and drivers of news, personalisation of news, changes in journalistic work routines, citizen and participatory journalism, journalism and mobile media, as well as developments in the relationship between journalism and democracy.
