This intro proseminar is meant as a general introduction to the study of the English language. It will offer a comprehensive panorama of the five main areas of linguistic inquiry, namely phonology (the study of how sounds are used and organised in natural language), morphology (the study of the smallest units of meaning in language, i.e. morphemes), syntax (the study of the principles governing sentence formation), semantics (the study of meaning in language) and pragmatics (the study of meaning as it emerges from language use). The scope of the proseminar is thus quite large and should provide students with the basic skills involved in the analysis of the English language.
