Speakers are not neutral towards language. Most have strong feelings and beliefs regarding certain varieties, accents, words, grammatical structures and other linguistic phenomena. Such judgements can result in heated arguments between friends, but also in more serious issues such as social advantage or discrimination.

In this course, we will study these beliefs and feelings and we will also discuss how they can be investigated. This course is therefore both an introduction to key concepts in the study of language attitudes, but also an introduction to scientific research on the matter. We will discuss different types of investigation, such as attitudinal surveys, and we will also consider their limitations.
