Lipids are fundamental building blocks of cellular membranes, serve to store metabolic energy, and play key roles in signal transduction and membrane trafficking. Here we discuss the different types of lipids made by eukaryotic cells, their specific structure, function, synthesis and turnover, and diseases associated with defects in lipid metabolism, both at the cellular and organismal level.
