Libertine (a term originally coined to describe religious free-thinkers or dissenters) in seventeenth-century England came to be associated with debauchery, recklessness, atheism, sexual profligacy and with the court and courtiers of King Charles II. In this course we will analyse examples of seventeenth-century English literature that were written by libertine authors or feature libertine characters. Students will explore the texts using the lenses of politics, philosophy, and gender studies in order to better understand how and why libertinism flourished in this period of English literature. Students will be asked to write a 3,000 word essay on the topic of their choosing, based on the texts covered in class. They will also need to submit a draft thesis statement and essay outline in order to get approval for / feedback on their chosen topic in advance of essay submission.
