This course aims to provide advanced knowledge of how electromagnetic waves interact with structured materials, both dielectric and metals. It will start by reviewing the basic principles of electromagnetism, that is discuss Maxwell's Equations both in free space and in the presence of matter. The course proceeds from individual scatterers (dipole, Mie) to optical materials. Then, periodically structured dielectric materials, so-called photonic crystals, will be discussed, including artificial and natural materials (insects, birds, etc.). The last part of the course focuses on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with delocalised electrons in nanostructured metals (plasmonics). The assembly of individual nanoantennae and percolating networks into plasmonic metamaterials will conclude the course.
