Ethnography is a key methodological approach in social research that seeks to provide rich and detailed insights into people’s lives within specific sociocultural contexts. In this seminar, students will gain knowledge about what is ethnography, what ethnographers do in practice, and the types of data typically collected in the field. The seminar will explore methods such as participant observation and various types of interviews—including unstructured, semi-structured, and biographical narrative interviews. The use of ethnography in educational research, the ethical dilemmas, as well as the possibilities and limitations of ethnographic research will be addressed. The seminar will be both theoretical and practical. Students will have the opportunity to engage with different ethnographic studies, exchange experiences with researchers conducting ethnography, and carry out their own ‘ethnographic work’ while reflecting on their research practice from a theoretical perspective.
