Generalisations and Abstractions
Generalisations and abstractions, as processes and outcomes, play a crucial role in the law. Legal rules, for example, are characterised by their general-abstract form. These concepts and their function are rarely discussed. This colloquium will question the relationship between generalisations, abstraction, and justice in concrete decisions. Additionally, the seminar will address the possibility of legal application and subsumption, as well as the nature of a rule.
As part of the seminar, we will visit the former concentration camp Natzweiler-Struthof (near Strasbourg), where from the end of 1941 to 1944 numerous prisoners - including political detainees, resistance fighters, prisoners of war, Jews, and other persecuted individuals from over 30 countries - were forced to perform hard labor under extreme conditions, especially in the quarry.
This year’s seminar will take place on November 8th and 9th, 2025, in Strasbourg.
