Transnational Family Relations: children, parents, and grandparents
Migration is a social phenomenon that influences not only the lives of those who migrate, but also those who remain behind, giving rise to new forms of family practices. In this seminar, we will explore the concept of transnational families and examine how these families “do family” across borders. Taking a three-generational and family practice-oriented perspective, we will analyze the impact of migration on children, parents, and grandparents, and reflect on how their complex social contexts raise new questions for professionals in the social sciences. Topics such as transnational parenting, transnational grandparenting, transnational care, transnational education and communication, as well as the sending of remittances, will be discussed. The seminar will be held in English, but discussions, presentations, and final student work may also be conducted in German.
