This survey course introduces students to the major writers, movements, and texts of American literature from its beginnings to the present. Through novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and speeches, students explore how American literature reflects and challenges ideas about identity, freedom, race, gender, democracy, and the American Dream. The course emphasizes close reading, historical context, and critical discussion, helping students understand how literature both shapes and responds to the social, political, and cultural realities of the United States.
