Building upon the principles of undertaking empirical social research covered in Einführung in die empirische Sozialforschung I this unit equips students with practical skills in designing and conducting empirical research, as well as in collecting, analysing, and presenting data to answer research questions.
In this seminar, you will examine how to choose appropriate research methods that are suitable for the kind of research questions you are seeking to answer. We will navigate the challenges, limitations, and common pitfalls faced by new researchers. You will also explore key ethical considerations in social research.
A strong emphasis is placed on hands‑on learning. The seminars will focus on making research design practical with students either undertaking research in the field or simulating ‘real world’ research in class. This involves implementing the research process from start to finish including developing feasible research designs, preparing for the field, developing and implementing a sampling strategy, gathering data (including in-depth interviews, focus groups, observations and social surveys), data management, developing an analytical strategy, analysing and reporting on data. Upon successful completion, students will have undertaken research and project management, problem‑solving, and developed applied research capabilities. Students will have gained valuable experience in producing knowledge for basic research as well as knowledge that can be used to informs policy and practice in a range of areas. strategies, as well as the skills needed to communicate their findings effectively to wider audiences.
