This module offers a practical introduction to designing and developing research projects that use quantitative methods, with a focus on quantitative analysis techniques. It focuses on the suitability of quantitative research approaches, quantitative research design, key statistical concepts and techniques, and the application of social statistics in education research and social policy evaluation. Although most examples are drawn from education, the knowledge and skills gained are broadly applicable to quantitative research across the social sciences.

This seminar in the Spring 2026 semester builds on the course content covered in Quantitative Methoden der Sozialforschung I. The emphasis in this semester is on the management and analysis of quantitative data, with students having the opportunity to i) develop a quantitative analytical strategy; ii)  apply their knowledge of quantitative analysis techniques to a quantitative dataset; iii) write up and communicate results from their quantitative data analysis; and iv) if possible consider the use of some more advanced multivariate analysis techniques.

The focus of the seminar is on the diagnostic power, practical application and value of different quantitative methods for understanding the social world. While some of the mathematics will be discussed, this will only be to illustrate the underlying logic of different quantitative analysis techniques.

This unit is suitable for students across the educational sciences, social sciences, humanities, media, creative arts, economics, etc.

Prerequisites for participation in this seminar:

Completion of the course ‘Quantitative Methoden der Sozialforschung I’ is a prerequisite for attending this course ‘Quantitative Methoden der Sozialforschung II’ in the spring semester of 2026.
