Ethnography is an important methodological approach in social research that aims to produce rich, in-depth accounts of people’s lives in specific sociocultural contexts. In this seminar, we will explore what ethnography is, what ethnographers do in practice, and the kinds of data typically generated in the field. We will examine methods such as participant observation and unstructured interviews, and discuss different ethnographic fields, including ethnography at home and away, as well as mobile and multi-sited ethnography. We will also address ethical issues in ethnographic research. The seminar is both theoretical and practical: students will gain hands-on experience in doing ethnography while reflecting on their own research practice.
