Traumatic experiences are shaped by the different challenges and life situations people face across cultures. However, most research on psychological trauma comes from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) countries, and these findings are often applied to other populations without considering cultural differences.

In this course, we will explore psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress from a global and multicultural perspective. We will ask important questions: Can one model of trauma apply to all cultures? If not, how can we assess trauma in culturally appropriate ways?
