This proseminar (UE-L06.01194) is aimed at first-year students and intended to be taken in conjunction with the two-semester survey lecture of English and American literature. It is designed to provide students with the analytic tools that are necessary for the academic study of Anglophone literatures. Students will be introduced to key concepts of Literary Studies and learn to apply them to literary texts in order to become more precise and capacious readers, researchers, writers, and thinkers. In addition to developing students’ close reading skills, the seminar will give an overview of the major genres of literature – prose, poetry, and drama – and acquaint students with the foundational literary conventions and terminology.
The proseminar takes place on Monday at 3:15pm at MIS03 3013.
Students are asked to acquire the following books, which you will be able to purchase at Librophoros at a reduced rate. Let’s support local bookstores and ensure that we are all on the same page/edition to facilitate in-class conversation and joint literary analysis:
- David Chariandy, Brother
- Beth Piatote, The Beadworkers
Active participation and regular attendance are required to pass this class. The course will involve intensive written work (without the use of AI), which students need to submit repeatedly during term time. More than two unexcused absences disqualify students from gaining credit. Grades are based on a final exam. This grade constitutes part of the final grade of the module exam.
