This is an interactive, workshop-style course for students registered for the course at the LC of the University of Fribourg. It is for participants with higher-intermediate English who are operational in English but need to hone their receptive and productive, particularly oral, language skills for academic learning activities and communication expected of students pursuing a Master’s degree. It supports those for whom English is a medium of instruction and/or an indispensable tool in their disciplines and beyond. It develops tools and techniques for the most important language needs of Master’s students with English as an additional language for academic purposes

The Autumn Workshop will involve talking to non-specialists about research in your field as well as your own particular research interests; describing observations, explaining hypotheses, purposes, and processes, reporting on events and findings, and arguing positions from various perspectives. Typical activities and tasks include oral presentations, small-group discussions, along with some writing. Regular interaction with interesting and engaging reading and listening texts of an interdisciplinary nature will provide springboards for development. We will also explore and review key areas of grammar and vocabulary in context so that you gain a deeper understanding about what language to use in different situations.

Evaluation: Regular attendance and active participation are required to pass this course, as is the successful completion of three oral tasks with appropriate documentation to be uploaded in the Moodle Classroom.
