Contemporary Scottish Fiction: Iain Banks, Janice Galloway, Irvine Welsh, Robert Alan Jamieson [SS 20]

In this proseminar we will study four contemporary Scottish novels: Iain Banks’s The Wasp Factory (1984); Janice Galloway’s The Trick is to Keep Breathing (1989); Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting (1991); Robert Alan Jamieson’s macCloud Falls (2017). While reading the novels closely, we will also consider their literary milieux (twentieth-century Scottish fiction; postmodernism) and their social, historical and political contexts.
