In the course of this proseminar, students will learn the basics of Old English grammar and syntax, so as to be able to fully engage with Old English literature in the original. The focus will be on close readings of short texts or extracts, followed by a discussion which will prioritise the development of the key analytical tools of academic essay writing. The seminar will offer a wide range of texts in Old English to enable students to have an idea of the diversity of literary genres which were written down in the vernacular: from heroic epic poetry to charms and herbal remedies, by way of curses, romance, and riddles. By the end of the semester, students should be able to grasp how Old English literature is a multifaceted treasure trove, as well as appreciate the Early English poets’ delight at puns, riddles, and ambiguities.
