There is a wide range of perspectives on the idea of equality and the absence thereof. On the one end of the spectrum, the idea that we are each other's equals is seen as a fundamental moral and political tenet of contemporary Western society. On the other end, concerns with equality are derided as meaningless or even counterproductive. In between, there is a large body of normative and empirical research on the significance of socioeconomic equality and inequality. In this course we will be examining this fraught yet critical pair of concepts from the standpoint of both philosophy and economics. Readings will be taken from the philosophical and economic literature on the topic.
