Ethics in doing research with children

With the advent of the new Sociology of Childhood and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), children are increasingly being asked about their experiences and perspectives, taking part in researches that seek to understand different aspect of their daily lives. However, including children in research raise many ethical questions throughout the research process. In this Seminar, we will discuss the four ethical principles that underpin research and think about practical questions posed in the design of the research project, in the field research with children, and in the dissemination of findings. We will address questions of power relations between adults and children, how to avoid harms in research, how to build up privacy and confidentiality, and how to deal with sensitive topics. In order to enhance reflexivity, the Seminar makes use of case studies involving different ethical dilemmas and how they were solved in practice. The Seminar aims to guide Master students to think ethically about their own research projects and to promote better research practices involving children.
