Philosophical reflection takes the form of “stepping back” from our own thoughts and actions and asking ourselves: “What do we mean by such-and-such?” or “What do we do when we do such-and-such?” In this course we will be engaging in philosophical reflection on some of the central concepts in economics, such as: value, preference, rationality, action, transaction, externalities, and the market. We will do so through a careful reading of a selection of classical and contemporary readings from both philosophically inclined economists and economically informed philosophers. You will walk away with a deeper understanding of what you are doing when you are doing economics.
