This seminar is aimed at first-year students and is intended to be taken in conjunction with the two-semester survey lecture of English and American literature. In it, students will be introduced to and will learn to apply essential analytical tools for the academic study of British and American literature. In addition to developing students’ close reading skills, the seminar will provide an overview of the major literary genres—prose, poetry, and drama—and acquaint students with the literary conventions and terminology relevant to each. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to be more precise and effective readers, researchers, and writers.
Shorter texts will be made available via Moodle. Students are asked to procure the following texts, which are available at a reduced rate at Librophoros:
· Abrams, M.H. & Harpham, G.G., A Glossary of Literary Terms
· Play: Shakespeare, William. Richard II, Arden Shakespeare, 3rd ser., ed. Charles R. Forker, London: Arden Shakespeare, 2002.
· Prose fiction: Gilman, Charlotte Perkins. The Yellow Wall-Paper, Herland, and Selected Writings, Penguin Press, 2019.
