Many real systems can be effectively modeled using networks whose nodes and links represent individual elements and their interactions, respectively. For example, social contacts among a group of school students can be used to construct their social network. While networks are used in a broad range of scientific disciplines (from computer science to biology), and their properties are very diverse, there are a handful of seminal network models that helped to start the field of network science. These models stand out for their simplicity and the ability to reproduce several characteristic properties of real networks. In this course, we will introduce these seminal models and present analytical approaches for their study.
